Ivy Sheward’s 3-2-1-Blog! Chapter 3

1st thing I learned- I learned that children in some Asian countries that out-preform US schools in topics such as science, math and reading have more frequent recess breaks than American children. These breaks give the children better focus.

2nd thing I learned- I learned to be cautious about how you address student’s families because there are so many different combinations and possibilities of who the child could be living with. It is better to ask about their ‘families’ than a specific member, i.e. their mother or father.

3rd thing I learned- I learned about some of the many types of categorized parents. To name a few, the authoritarian parents (parents that seem cold and controlling and strict but love their children) and the rejecting/neglecting parents (parents who show little involvement or care with their children). These characteristics from parents can explain a lot about children’s behaviours.

1st connection I made- A connection I made was to my parents and their parenting style. My parents are a 50/50 split of authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. They are very supportive of me and my brothers and we have strict rules to follow and we have strict consequences to poor decisions but we don’t talk much about feelings.

2nd connection I made- A connection I made is that I has an identifiable peer group through my later elementary years, high school years and even university years. I strongly identify with the ‘artsy’ or ‘musical’ groups, and have gone far enough to be an arts education teacher.

1 question I still have- Talking about childhood obesity, page 69 of the textbook says, “Playing with friends or participating in sports can be affected negatively.” If we have identified that overweight children feel negative after these encounters and experiences, how do we expect to make them feel more involved and positive about experiences like these.
