“CURRICULUM POLICY AND THE POLITICS OF WHAT SHOULD BE LEARNED IN SCHOOLS” Response
Beforehand:
I think school curricula are developed by a few groups- the ministry of education had the final say but there is a group of (I think usually teachers) who get together and decide what courses should entail.
Afterward:
How are school curricula developed and implemented? What new information/perspectives does this reading provide about the development and implementation of school curriculum? Is there anything that surprises you or maybe that concerns you? IMPORTANT – Please write your blog before our lecture as YOUR OPINION will be an integral part of the lecture.
School curricula are “…developed by governments or other sanctioned authorities for standard use in schools across a state, province, or country.” It is implemented through “typology of origins (where policy comes from), adoption (from an idea to a decision), implementation, and outcomes (results, intended or not, of decisions).” After reading this, I was surprised that politics has such influence on curricula. On the other hand, I wasn’t surprised to see that subject and subject matters were so controversial. Everyone has a different opinion, whether it be a heavier component of spelling or adjectives in ELA or if ELA should have as much class time as it does.
